A measured guide to mandatory and voluntary VAT registration thresholds, periods, and next steps for UAE businesses.
The mandatory threshold
For a UAE resident business, mandatory VAT registration generally applies if the value of taxable supplies and imports exceeds AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, or is expected to exceed that amount in the next 30 days. The assessment uses taxable supplies and imports, rather than simply every amount passing through a bank account. Non-resident rules can differ; review those separately with the Federal Tax Authority.
Voluntary registration
A resident business may generally apply for voluntary registration when taxable supplies and imports, or taxable expenses, exceed AED 187,500 under the relevant look-back or expected-forward test. Being below the mandatory threshold does not always mean registration is irrelevant.
Returns and records
VAT is generally charged at 5% on standard-rated taxable supplies. Zero-rated supplies remain taxable at 0%, while exempt supplies have different treatment; classifying them correctly matters to registration calculations and recovery of input tax. Registered businesses file for the tax period assigned by the FTA. Returns and payments are generally due within 28 days of the end of that tax period; check your EmaraTax account for the assigned dates. Consistent sales invoices, purchase records, and reconciliations make the return easier to review.
A sensible next step
Calculate your qualifying supplies and imports on a rolling basis, check the expected next 30 days, and document the calculation. If you are near a threshold, confirm the correct treatment with current FTA guidance or a qualified adviser. An early records review can also reveal missing invoices or classification questions.

Common questions
Is the AED 375,000 threshold based on profit?
No. The mandatory VAT registration threshold generally concerns taxable supplies and imports under the relevant period tests, not profit.
Does every registered business file quarterly?
No. The FTA assigns the tax period. Check the period shown for your business.
